Two of the major players in the sector are FANUC and KUKA. Both have a defined approach to how they are supplying the automotive industry. This is based on heavy research and development programmes. It sees them focussing on developing products which are highly innovative and that iron out technological problems. From there the companies build on strategic partnerships which means they can develop long term relationships to the benefits of all parties. This includes software upgrades and detailed maintenance agreements.

The automotive industry is geared towards creating plants that are totally automated, with robots fulfilling all the major functions on an assembly line. The investment on any one plant is huge, so robot manufacturers need to ensure that they not only win the big orders, but that they stay very close to the customer throughout the life of the plant.
