Why do they use robots in the pharmaceutical industry?
There are two key reasons why the pharmaceutical industry uses robots. Firstly, to increase capacity and productivity, and secondly, to maintain and increase safety levels in laboratory work and in diagnosis.
When it comes to packaging, the latest figures suggest that almost 40% of packaging plants will make use of robots which is a near 15% increase over the last five years. Their abilities in this area have been well reported and it includes speed and their ability to keep going over shifts. Compared to humans, robots are said to be up to four times faster in packing tasks and they can do this for 24-hour periods. What’s more, they are extremely accurate and make few mistakes.
And for these reasons, they are also used in laboratories, where the consistency operation and the safety angle is very important. Work in the laboratory centres around the research, and development of drugs.
Robots are also being used to identify counterfeit medicines, a growing worldwide problem. Robots scanners are highly accurate and can quickly spot irregular details, for example, via the barcode information provided.
Then there are robot pharmacies. Here robots are adept at preparing very accurate prescriptions at a consistent rate which is a huge benefit for those diagnosing patients and for the patients themselves.
It is because of these applications, that robots are playing an increasingly important role in the pharmaceutical industry.
