What is the most popular use for robots in the marine sector?
It is difficult to pinpoint the most popular use for robots in the marine industry, especially as many have just been developed as prototypes and are yet to be used as fully operational devices.
Unmanned underwater robots are already in use and they are put to work across a number of activities, including the cleanup of oceans. So are robots which operate on the surface of the world’s oceans and waterways.
For example, take the robots which are used in potentially hazardous situations such as oil spills. A company involved in this area is called SEA-KIT and it is in a partnership with the US Maritime Administration. Together they are developing robotic oil cleanup vessels.
Consider that oil slicks on the ocean's surface are very dangerous for humans to have to handle. Not only is the risk of toxic fume inhalation or skin damage high, but the chance that the oil might ignite is also very likely. This is not a good environment for humans to work and robots are the best way to avoid such dangers.
Eventually, such vessels as these will be employed throughout the world, quietly and efficiently collecting waste and sorting out chemical spills. And the more of them out there, the better for the planet.
